Samples of expanded CCMV are prepared at pH 7.6 in the absence of divalent ions and plunge frozen in the presence of a photoacid (NPE-caged proton). The pH of the sample is then lowered to 4.5 by releasing the photoacid with UV irradiation (266 nm).</details>
